There are pools in China so green they look edited. Libo Xiaoqikong is where you'll find them — a stretch of karst valley in southern Guizhou where the river runs in waterfalls and bends over lime-green water so clear you can count the pebbles. It's a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and one of the most beautiful places in the province.

What is Xiaoqikong?

The name means "Little Seven Arch", after a historic seven-arch stone bridge that spans a calm stretch of the river. Around it runs the scenic area: wooden walkways threading between terraced falls, a forest you can wade through, and pools coloured by dissolved limestone into every shade of green and turquoise.

Libo is part of the South China Karst, a UNESCO World Heritage property that spans several provinces. Xiaoqikong is its most famous — and most photogenic — slice.

The three must-sees

SightWhat it is
The 68-step cascadeA river that drops down a staircase of 68 connected waterfalls, with boardwalks running alongside — Guizhou's best waterside walk
The Seven-Arch BridgeThe stone bridge the area is named after, framed by emerald water — the classic postcard shot
The Water ForestA shallow, ankle-deep stream threading between trees — you walk in the water between forest and falls

Best time to visit

Water volume is at its best from June to October, when the cascade is full and the pools are at their deepest green. Summer is also the busiest — as with Huangguoshu, the trick is to arrive early in the morning, before the tour buses, or late in the afternoon when the groups thin out. A private car lets you control exactly when you arrive.

Xiaoqikong or Daqikong?

The neighbouring Daqikong ("Big Seven Arch") is a wilder, larger gorge with a boat ride through a narrow passage between cliffs. They pair well in one day, but if you only have time for one, Xiaoqikong is the showpiece. Most travellers find a full day in Xiaoqikong — with its walks and waterfall steps — more than satisfying.

How to visit

Libo sits about 3.5 hours south of Guiyang by road. The scenic area is a long one-way route with shuttle buses, so the logistics (shuttles, queues, where to leave a car) are more work than they look. On a private tour your driver handles the route and the timing, and your guide knows exactly where to stop for the best water when the light is right.

Combine it wisely. Libo pairs naturally with Huangguoshu Waterfall and sacred Mount Fanjingshan on a 6-day loop — two UNESCO landscapes and Asia's largest waterfall in one private trip.
